The reference rate used for over-the-counter dollar trading in Russia fell below 84 rubles on Sept. 10. This marked the first time the rate had been measured below that level since Aug. 26.
At 12:10 p.m. Moscow time, the dollar rate fell to 83.91 rubles. This was 1.04 rubles below the previous close.
The yuan is used to calculate the rate
After dollar trading on the Moscow Exchange was suspended in the summer of 2024, the yuan emerged as the ruble’s direct reference. Yuan trading on the exchange takes place between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
The dollar-to-ruble reference rate is calculated during these hours using the dollar-yuan rate in the foreign exchange market and the yuan-ruble rate on the Moscow Exchange. The resulting figure serves as the main reference for over-the-counter dollar trading against the ruble.
