The Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics team decided not to participate in the World Challenge Cup final series in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, after being denied the display of the Russian flag and the playing of the national anthem.
Mayor's Statement
Cluj Mayor Emil Boc said in a social media post, "I support sports and competitions, but I do not consent to the use of political symbols of an aggressive state in a country that is part of the unity of Europe." Boc stated that this stance is in line with the diplomatic position of Romania and the EU.
Russian Federation Reacts
The Russian Gymnastics Federation stated that the organizers verbally informed them that the Russian flag would not be displayed in the gymnasium and the national anthem would not be played if Russian athletes came first, leading the Russian delegation to withdraw from the competition.
The federation argued that this situation is a direct violation of the decision taken by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Executive Committee in May that restored full participation for Russian gymnasts. It also emphasized that the decision violates the FIG Statutes and the updated Olympic Charter provisions aimed at protecting athletes from external political, governmental, social, or economic pressures.
Warning from Romanian Official
President of the Romanian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation Irina Deleanu warned that this development could jeopardize the future of the tournament and even open the door to possible sanctions from the FIG. Deleanu reminded that Russia's participation in international competitions is a sensitive issue.
Background
As the global sports world gradually attempts to reintegrate Russian athletes into international championships, the conditions and restrictions regarding their participation continue to be debated. The FIG has yet to make an official statement on the incident.
