Russia's Foreign Ministry announced plans to summon Romania's chargé d'affaires in Moscow, Liliana Burda, on Thursday.
In a brief statement, the ministry said Burda was expected to be summoned. However, the statement did not publicly specify a definitive reason for the planned action.
Tensions rose after Bucharest's move in late July
Moscow's plan emerged exactly one month after Bucharest declared a Russian diplomat persona non grata, citing repeated drone incursions in late July.
Romania's Foreign Ministry also recalled its ambassador in Moscow for consultations during the same period. The ministry summoned Russia's ambassador to Bucharest, Vladimir Lipayev, and showed him fragments of a drone destroyed over Romanian territory.
In a statement issued on July 27, Romania's Foreign Ministry described the actions in question as illegal and irresponsible. The ministry said it had clearly established where responsibility lay and deemed Russia's violation of Romanian airspace unacceptable and intolerable.
Three drones were shot down from July 24 to 26
The Romanian army shot down three drones said to have originated from Russia between July 24 and 26.
Romania, which borders Ukraine, has reported multiple airspace violations since the Russia-Ukraine war began in 2022.
