Russia’s Investigative Committee has ended the murder investigation into St. Petersburg businessman Ilya Traber. The decision cleared him of all charges related to the October 2020 killing of Alexander Petrov near Vyborg in the Leningrad region.
The committee, described as Russia’s top investigative agency, concluded that Traber was not involved in the murder. Traber’s lawyer, Igor Sochiyants, also announced that the murder charges against his client had been dropped.
Detention and release
Traber was detained on June 17 on suspicion of arranging Petrov’s killing outside his home. Petrov was a local politician and was also described as Traber’s business rival.
The 75-year-old businessman was released from Moscow’s Lefortovo Pre-Trial Detention Center last Thursday because of health problems. With the charges dropped, Traber became eligible to seek compensation from the state for unlawful detention.
Maritime transport and port operations
In the 1990s, Traber built an extensive network of companies in maritime transport and port operations in northwestern Russia. During the two months he spent in detention, he transferred his stakes in at least four major companies.
The Kremlin had previously confirmed Traber’s ties to the early period of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s political career.
