Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected Israel’s attacks and violations targeting Syria’s sovereignty during a phone call with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on Wednesday. Putin also reiterated that Russia supports Syria’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
According to a statement from the Syrian Presidency, the two sides discussed ways to develop relations and cooperation between the two countries in areas of mutual interest. Al-Sharaa and Putin also reviewed the latest developments in the region and the situation in Syria.
The two sides said coordination, consultation and communication channels should remain open to strengthen security and stability in Syria and the region and serve common interests.
The Kremlin said the sides expressed their readiness to deepen political dialogue and expand cooperation, particularly in the commercial, economic and humanitarian fields. It added that Russia’s principled support for Syria’s unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty remained unchanged.
The Kremlin said this position also covered efforts to improve conditions in Syria and create the necessary conditions for the country’s long-term reconstruction. Following the call, the two sides agreed to continue their contacts.
The situation in the Golan Heights and southern Syria
Israel has kept most of the Golan Heights under occupation since 1967. After Bashar Assad’s rule in Syria ended on December 8, 2024, Israel announced that the ceasefire-line agreement was no longer valid.
Israel subsequently took control of Syria’s buffer zone and several positions, including the Syrian side of Mount Hermon. Israel has carried out near-daily cross-border incursions in southern Syria, particularly in the rural areas of Daraa and Quneitra governorates, conducting detentions, setting up checkpoints and searching pedestrians.
