Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the plenary session of the eighth summit of the heads of state and government of the member countries of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) on October 27. The summit is being held at the World Trade Center in Moscow.
Putin said any attempts to exclude Russia from the global gas market resulted in exorbitant costs, primarily for foreign end consumers of gas—companies, enterprises and households. “That is exactly what we are seeing now in Europe, which is harming its own industry and social sphere by rejecting Russian energy supplies and terminating long-term contracts,” he said.
“You know, there is a saying in Russia: Do not dig a pit for someone else, or you may fall into it yourself. In my view, that is exactly what has happened today in the European Union,” the president said.
Putin also noted that the worsening situation in the Middle East had disrupted established logistics chains and supply routes, while terrorist attacks had been carried out against Russian gas pipelines to Europe. He said that instead of erecting barriers, gas-exporting countries should strengthen cooperation based on their own capabilities and sovereign technologies.
Putin recalled that Russia ranks first in the world in natural gas reserves and second in production.
