Russia has announced plans to enable East Timor citizens to study at Russian universities. This statement was made during a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and East Timor's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão at the Russia-ASEAN Summit held in Kazan.
Putin emphasized Russia's readiness to expand humanitarian cooperation, highlighting science, education, and specialist training as key areas.
The President specifically mentioned offering young East Timorese the opportunity to study at higher education institutions in Russia. It was noted that Moscow aims to deepen education-based relations with ASEAN countries through this initiative.
Ongoing Engagements at the Kazan Summit
The 35th anniversary Russia-ASEAN Summit is taking place in Kazan from June 17 to 19. The Business Forum, held during the summit's sessions, was also launched around the same time.
ASEAN was established in 1967 and currently includes Brunei, East Timor, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. Putin has previously highlighted the region's emergence as a significant economic hub in the Asia-Pacific.
Russia's educational outreach to East Timor signals that cultural and academic ties between the two sides are becoming more prominent. Science, education, and personnel training were also topics discussed during the meeting.
