Perekrestok, one of Russia's leading supermarket chains, has launched a cash payment option at self-service checkouts. The company, operating under X5 Group, implemented the first application in its store located in a shopping center in Moscow.
According to a company statement, customers can now pay with both bank cards and cash at self-service checkouts, allowing them to complete their purchases without needing a cashier.
How Does Cash Payment Work?
The new system operates through a special cash acceptance device integrated into self-service checkouts. After selecting the cash payment option, the customer inserts banknotes and coins into the device. The system calculates the total amount, automatically gives change, and completes the transaction.
X5 Group stated that this method reduces payment time compared to traditional checkouts and offers customers a more comfortable shopping experience. It was also noted to contribute to staff efficiency.
From Pilot Test to Widespread Use
Announcing that the pilot application in Moscow is in its final stage, the company stated that the new payment method met demand and produced effective results in the store with high customer traffic. Based on these results, the technology is planned to be rolled out to other stores.
In the coming period, Perekrestok is considering installing similar cash acceptance devices in 300 supermarkets per year. This step is seen as an innovation that could transform the self-service shopping experience in the Russian retail sector.
