A foreign unmanned aerial vehicle that entered Latvian airspace was shot down by fighter jets assigned to the NATO mission conducting patrols in the Baltic states. Latvia’s National Armed Forces announced the incident.
The drone was hit at high altitude near Rugāji in the Balvi region. Latvian authorities said the vehicle’s fragments may therefore have been scattered across a wide area.
Search launched in the debris area
Latvian security forces secured the area where the debris may have fallen and began searching the terrain. Authorities called on the public not to approach parts that could belong to the drone and to notify the 112 emergency call center if they found any such objects.
Air threat warning issued in four regions
After the drone was spotted, an air threat warning was issued in the Augšdaugava, Preiļi, Rēzekne and Balvi regions. Residents were asked to remain indoors and avoid approaching low-flying vehicles or suspicious objects.
Iveta Bērziņa, a representative of Latvia’s National Armed Forces, explained that the warning was extended to multiple regions because the vehicle was moving toward Latvian territory and might change its flight path.
Warning lifted at 4:50 a.m. local time
The Latvian army announced that the threat had been eliminated. The air threat warning was canceled at 4:50 a.m. local time.
The origin of the unmanned aerial vehicle and the country or actor to which it belonged have not yet been determined. Latvian authorities said further information about the incident would be released later.
