Spain’s Civil Guard Directorate is investigating social media groups where calls for a new mass migration attempt to Ceuta, Spain’s territory in North Africa, were shared.
A campaign urging people to travel to Ceuta was identified in chat groups on specific platforms under investigation. The groups, which include more than 400,000 people, contain calls pointing to August 15 as well as logistical details.
Spanish authorities concluded that the posts involved digital coordination. However, it remains uncertain whether a new migration attempt will take place, and there is no evidence that the campaign was planned by the Moroccan government or criminal organizations.
Security measures in Ceuta
During a previous attempt to reach Ceuta, more than 800 irregular migrants were intercepted while trying to swim from the coast of the Moroccan town of Castillejos to Spanish territory.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said after the incident that the government had mobilized all its resources. Following an increase in irregular migration attempts toward Ceuta, the Spanish government decided to deploy the armed forces to the area to ensure security.
