Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that no official invitation was sent through formal channels for a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskiy on the sidelines of the G7 Summit.
Peskov noted that there is no official communication channel between Moscow and Kyiv, but added that if Zelenskiy approaches the matter seriously and responsibly, Putin could receive him in Moscow.
Ukrainian side conveyed the proposal through several channels
Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced a day earlier that he had proposed a meeting with Putin during the G7 Summit in France.
A source speaking to RBC-Ukraine said Kyiv sent this proposal through various means including intermediaries, diplomats, and intelligence channels, but no clear response was received from the Kremlin.
June call for talks resurfaces
On June 4, Zelenskiy published an open letter calling for a face-to-face meeting with Putin and proposed negotiations to end the war.
The next day, Putin said at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum that meeting Zelenskiy at that time would be pointless.
Putin also claimed that weeks before Zelenskiy’s open letter, a Russian businessman had requested a personal meeting with him on Zelenskiy’s behalf. It was later revealed that this businessman was Roman Abramovich.
The search for contact between the parties has resurfaced amid ongoing hopes for a diplomatic resolution to the war. However, the Kremlin’s latest statement once again indicated that no official grounds exist for such a meeting.
