Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in New York during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting lasted approximately 20 minutes and was the two leaders' first official encounter. It was held at Kyiv's request.
During Tuesday's meeting, Takaichi said Japan would continue supporting Ukraine and maintain sanctions against Russia in coordination with the international community.
It is essential for countries to come together and support Ukraine so that a just and lasting peace can be achieved as soon as possible.
As Russia's war against Ukraine enters its fifth year, Takaichi stressed that Tokyo's solidarity with Kyiv would continue.
Zelenskyy said he was confident that peace would come to Ukraine. He expressed hope that Japanese companies would participate in rebuilding his country and said the sanctions against Russia had been effective.
The Ukrainian president said his country would not forget the humanitarian aid and energy support Japan had provided to date.
