Human remains found in north Kosovo dig amid mass grave suspicion

Human remains were found during excavation work in the village of Kalluder, part of the Zubin Potok municipality in northern Kosovo. Authorities are considering the possibility of a mass grave in the area.

Kosovo police detained two Kosovo Serbs on suspicion of war crimes. The excavation site is said to be an area that had not been previously examined.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti said in a statement that the remains found may be linked to 23 intellectuals who were abducted from Mitrovica on April 19, 1999, and remain missing. “Preliminary findings indicate that a mass grave may exist in the area. We are awaiting the results of the competent institutions’ examination,” Kurti said.

During the 1998-1999 Kosovo War, more than 10,000 people, mostly Albanians, lost their lives and over a million people were forced to flee their homes. It is estimated that more than 1,600 people who went missing during the war have yet to be found.
