The drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport has been linked to Berlin’s preparations for new measures against Moscow. The German government is reportedly preparing to officially hold Russia responsible and announce comprehensive measures.
Berlin allegedly plans to implement the measures it will impose directly alongside new sanctions being prepared by the European Union. The announcement is expected at the beginning of next week, around the same time as the meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Ireland on Tuesday.
The German government has neither confirmed nor denied these claims.
Drone found at the airport
On August 4, a drone believed to contain explosives was found at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany near a cargo aircraft belonging to Ukraine.
U.S. intelligence said the characteristics of the drone, which was believed to be carrying explosives, were specific to Russian military intelligence. However, this assessment does not establish the claims regarding responsibility for the incident as conclusive.
It was also alleged that Germany’s response would not be limited to expelling Russian diplomats or closing the Russian House in Berlin. The incident in Leipzig is being assessed within the framework of an initiative known as “Turning Point 2.0” in Germany’s security policy.
