The protest movement that started in France has reached Greece. On Oct. 21, students and teachers across the country demonstrated against Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' education policies and the rising cost of living.
The largest march was in Athens, where police estimated about 10,000 people took part. Protests were also held in Thessaloniki, Patras, Larissa and Crete. Teachers went on strike and students blocked some schools, although others stayed open.
Tents outside parliament
University students pitched tents in Athens' Syntagma Square outside parliament to protest the housing crisis. Demonstrators want free public education, safe schools, smaller classes and the right to housing, while teachers are demanding permanent posts and pay rises.
Protesters openly cite the French demonstrations as their model. The protests have become a serious test for the center-right government, which faces elections in mid-2027.
