An explosion affecting electricity generation occurred in Zawiya, western Libya. Some generation units were taken offline after the incident near the power plant on Saturday.
The General Electricity Company of Libya announced that teams had begun examining the technical circumstances and cause of the explosion. The company’s work is continuing alongside an investigation aimed at determining the source of the incident.
Efforts are also continuing to gradually restore electricity services at the plant. The General Electricity Company of Libya said it expects the electricity supply to return to normal shortly.
The company apologized to residents for the outages and disruptions to services. Teams will continue working in the field until the electricity grid is fully stabilized.
Attacks on critical infrastructure in Zawiya
The explosion occurred after a series of incidents targeting critical infrastructure in the city. Approximately one week earlier, unidentified drones targeted oil storage tanks, desalination facilities and electricity infrastructure in Zawiya.
The attacks heightened concerns about Zawiya’s security, economy and social stability. However, no group claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Authorities launched an investigation to determine the source of the drones and identify those responsible for the attacks.
