August Hanning, who headed Germany’s BND from 1998 to 2005 and then served as interior state secretary until 2009, has been arrested. The 80-year-old was detained on Oct. 6 at his home in Nordwalde.

Prosecutors say his former office chief, Manfred D., sold him about 2,000 documents between 2010 and June 2022, including assessments of the Russian military, material on Iran’s nuclear program and chancellery briefings.
Not Russia

Prosecutors did not name a country, but German media stress it was not Russia. Der Spiegel reported suspicions that documents reached an Azerbaijani intelligence officer and that a China link is also being examined. It is the BND’s second major spy case in recent years, after a former employee went on trial for allegedly spying for Russia. Hanning faces life in prison if convicted.
