The European Union took a new step in the accession process of Ukraine and Moldova. Ireland, which holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council, announced on social media platform X that member states agreed to open the sixth thematic block, titled “External Relations”, within the framework of the negotiations.
At the meeting, it was also decided to provisionally close chapters 8 and 29 in the negotiations with Montenegro, and chapters 25, 26 and 30 in the negotiations with Albania.
European Council President António Costa welcomed the decision taken by the ambassadors regarding Ukraine and Moldova. Costa said, “This decision has brought both countries one step closer to EU membership,” and stressed that the union will continue to support these two countries on their path to membership.
Ukraine applied for EU membership on 28 February 2022, after the conflict with Russia began. Moldova took the same step on 3 March 2022. In June 2022, EU leaders approved granting candidate status to both countries. In December 2023, it was decided to start membership negotiations, and formal negotiations began in June 2024. The first thematic block was opened in June 2026, after Hungary lifted its long-standing veto.
