The European Union has approved the UK's inclusion in a large-scale military financing program for Ukraine. The EU Council announced that member states gave the 'green light' to London's participation in the €90 billion loan support mechanism created to meet Ukraine's urgent defence needs in 2026 and 2027.
The decision paves the way for Ukraine to use this loan financing to purchase defence products not only from companies in the EU, European Economic Area and European Free Trade Association countries, but also from British defence industry companies.
Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Helen McEntee, whose country holds the rotating EU Council presidency, commented on the decision. McEntee said, "Today's decision reflects the shared determination of the EU and the UK to support Ukraine for as long as it takes to end Russia's illegal war of aggression and achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace."
The EU Council document stated that member states approved London's participation in the loan program because the UK met the three conditions required for third countries to join the mechanism.
