Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy met with US Permanent Representative to NATO Ambassador Matthew Whitaker in the capital Kyiv. According to a statement from the Ukrainian Presidential Office, the results of the NATO summit held in Ankara and steps to protect Ukrainian skies were discussed.
Assessing the summit, Zelenskiy said, "I think it was a very successful summit. We are grateful to the United States for the great support coming from you."
The Ukrainian leader also provided information about the front-line situation and said, "Of course, every day is difficult for our soldiers, and that is understandable. But the initiative is not in the hands of the Russians, and I think that is good."
During the meeting, an agreement being prepared called the Drone Deal between the US and Ukraine, and signed documents were discussed. Zelenskiy described the sending of Ukrainian-made unmanned aerial vehicles to the US for testing as an important opportunity.
The PURL program, which is critical for Ukraine’s air defense, also came up. Zelenskiy thanked Whitaker for his contributions to this program. Ambassador Whitaker noted that the program was launched a year ago at the initiative of US President Donald Trump and said, "I think we have reached a level of almost $8 billion. This is American equipment financed by European funds. That was exactly the basic logic of the program."
Zelenskiy also thanked Lieutenant General Curtis Buzzard, Commander of NATO’s Special Mission for Ukraine Security Support and Training, who was present at the meeting, for his support to Ukraine and presented him with the Order of Merit, III Degree.
After the meeting, Zelenskiy said on his Telegram channel, "It was a good meeting. Our priority topic was how to protect Ukrainian skies by increasing the supply of interceptor missiles for Patriot systems within PURL, which has become a key priority as intense Russian attacks have not stopped." The Ukrainian leader also stated that they hope for the implementation of President Trump’s decision made in Ankara to grant Ukraine a Patriot production license and for the finalization of the Drone Deal as soon as possible.
