Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko said Russia is open to scientists and foreign students in remarks at a conference held as part of the 2026 International Youth Festival in Yekaterinburg.
Speaking at the event titled “Russia: The Path of the Founders. From Great Heritage to Technological Leadership,” Chernyshenko said, “Our doors are open to everyone who wants to make their mark in science. We have very good conditions for this.”
Russia targets 500,000 foreign students
Chernyshenko said that, in line with instructions from the President of Russia, at least 500,000 foreign students are planned to be studying at universities in the country by 2030. He said the government was making progress toward achieving this target.
The deputy prime minister also said that the language of science could bring people together and, over time, change the way the world looks.
Energy demand from artificial intelligence centers to rise
Another issue raised by Chernyshenko was the energy consumption of data centers that process artificial intelligence data. He said the annual energy use of these centers is expected to rise from 155 terawatt-hours in 2025 to 465 terawatt-hours in 2030.
Noting that the increase would amount to three times the current level, Chernyshenko argued that thermonuclear and nuclear energy should be developed. He described nuclear energy as one of the cleanest and most environmentally friendly energy sources in the world.
Participants from 191 countries in Yekaterinburg
The International Youth Festival, held under the slogan “Follow your dream. Together with Russia,” is taking place in Yekaterinburg from September 11 to 17. The festival officially opened on September 13.
