Australia is taking legal action against the Telegram messaging platform, citing its failure to adequately control terrorist-linked content. eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant announced they will file a lawsuit in federal court.
Grant said, "We have charged Telegram with failing to detect, prevent and block terrorist content." The commissioner argued that the platform did not remove such content even after users reported it.
These included videos of the mosque attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, and attacks at a supermarket in the United States, the commissioner said. Inman Grant noted that these videos sometimes remained accessible on the platform even three months later.
The Australian official shared the view that "It is more important than ever for platforms to fulfill their responsibilities." This step is seen as part of growing legal pressure on internet platforms in Western countries to moderate content.
