In the state parliamentary election in Germany’s Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD came ahead of the other parties with 44.5 percent of the vote, according to an exit poll by ARD television.
The Christian Democratic Union came second with 18.5 percent in the poll. The Left received 9.5 percent, the Greens 9 percent and the Social Democratic Party 8 percent.
The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance received 5 percent and passed the electoral threshold, according to the preliminary results.
The AfD’s vote share increased by 23.7 percentage points compared with the 2021 election. However, the exit poll showed that the party did not secure an absolute majority. As a result, the AfD’s ability to form a government may depend on the outcome of coalition talks.
Final results from the Saxony-Anhalt election are expected to be announced overnight or the following day.
