Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Belarus of assisting Russia's drone attacks against Ukraine. Zelenskyy issued an ultimatum to Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, demanding the removal within a week of communication equipment allegedly used to guide attacks launched from Belarusian territory.
"If He Doesn't Want to Be Part of the War, He Should Remove It"
Speaking at a joint press conference with Honduran President Nasry Asfura, Zelenskyy referred to relay systems mounted on communication towers in two regions of Belarus. The Ukrainian leader claimed this equipment is being used to coordinate Russian drone strikes targeting civilian areas, rather than active front lines.
"There are relay systems on those towers," Zelenskyy said. "He can remove them. If he really doesn't want to be part of the war, he should remove and shut down that equipment."
Alleged Contribution to Daily Civilian Casualties
The Ukrainian leader argued that the operation of these systems contributes to daily civilian casualties in Ukraine. Stating that Belarusian authorities have a week to dismantle the equipment, Zelenskyy said, "Every day our civilians are dying because of this. If he doesn't [shut it down], we will."
Zelenskyy sharpened his criticism of the Belarusian dictator, asserting that despite Lukashenko's repeated claims of not wanting to be involved in the war, the regime continues to aid Russia's military campaign.
Allegation That Belarus Is a Fuel Supplier for Russian Army
The Ukrainian President also claimed that Belarus plays a significant role in supplying fuel used by Russian forces. Zelenskyy suggested Belarus could ultimately restrict exports supporting Moscow's military operations.
"Today Belarus is one of the main suppliers of the Russian army," Zelenskyy said. "Can this be stopped? I am convinced it is within his power."
Claims of Apology and Threats from Lukashenko
A few days before Zelenskyy's remarks, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko told Al Arabiya in an interview that Belarus poses no military threat to Ukraine and apologized to Zelenskyy for his earlier harsh words.
Lukashenko stated his words were a response to threats from Ukraine, which included claims that Kyiv had identified hundreds of potential targets in Belarus and knew his location. Lukashenko said, "If Volodymyr was offended, I apologize to him for these words."
