In the city of Drohobych in Ukraine's Lviv region, an incident occurred where two women listening to Russian music were forced to apologize on camera under police supervision. Videos published by the Ukraine-based news site Strana.ua documented the incident.
According to the report, while a group was listening to Russian music in a park, a woman at a nearby table demanded the music be turned off. When the listeners refused, saying "We have spoken Russian all our lives," an argument broke out and police were called to the scene.
In a second video published by Strana.ua, the two women are seen repeating words dictated by a man behind the camera. The women said in turn: "We apologize to the public. This will not happen again. We apologize for our behavior."
Language policies tighten
In Ukraine, policies initiated after the change of government in 2014 brought restrictions on everything connected to the Russian language. The law "On Ensuring the Functioning of Ukrainian as the State Language," adopted in 2019, made the use of Ukrainian mandatory in public spaces.
In December 2023, a national minorities law adopted to meet the demands of the European Commission further tightened restrictions on Russian while granting significant concessions to other minority languages.
