The Ukrainian General Staff announced that since Russia's large-scale attack began on February 24, 2022, Russia has lost approximately 1,388,050 soldiers in Ukraine. The institution reported that Russian losses in the last 24 hours were recorded as 1,370.
The statement included not only personnel losses but also a detailed breakdown of military equipment belonging to the Russian army. According to this, during the war, 12,038 tanks, 24,779 armored combat vehicles, 44,240 artillery systems, and 1,877 multiple rocket launchers were lost.
Other items on the General Staff's list included 1,431 air defense systems, 436 aircraft, 353 helicopters, 357,589 unmanned aerial vehicles, 1,684 unmanned ground vehicles, 33 ships and boats, and two submarines.
The Ukrainian side has not disclosed its own losses throughout the war, citing operational secrecy as the reason. Therefore, comparisons of losses between the two sides rely on estimates from independent organizations.
Assessments by the US-based Center for Strategic and International Studies also indicate that Russian losses significantly exceed Ukrainian losses. The institution estimates the ratio to be roughly between 2.5 to 1 and 2 to 1.
In the center's January 2026 report, it is estimated that Ukraine may have suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 losses from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 of those being soldiers killed in action.
