Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations, Andriy Melnyk, called on the Security Council to take effective measures against Russia. Addressing the Council, Melnyk said Ukrainians were celebrating Independence Day with “mixed feelings.”
Melnyk said Russia’s war had entered what he called its “most barbaric stage” and claimed that Ukraine was being targeted with ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Melnyk calls for comprehensive sanctions
Melnyk argued that the international community had limited its response to statements and meetings condemning Russia, and said no concrete and effective steps had been taken to hold Moscow accountable. He also said that some Security Council members had avoided directly naming Russia in their statements on the war.
Stating that the Security Council had so far failed to take effective action to hold Russia accountable and prevent attacks against Ukraine, Melnyk said only determined action could halt Russia’s war capacity. Ukraine’s UN ambassador therefore called for “the toughest and most comprehensive sanctions” to be imposed on Russia.
Objection to Nebenzya’s remarks
Melnyk also reacted to remarks by Russia’s UN ambassador, Vasily Nebenzya, concerning Ukraine’s attacks on targets in Russian territory. He said he did not find credible Nebenzya’s accusations that civilians in Russia had been harmed.
