Evgeniy Hmara became Ukraine's new defense minister following a vote in parliament. The appointment was approved with the votes of 312 lawmakers, while two voted against it.
Speaking in parliament, Hmara listed strengthening the front line and ensuring the operational delivery of weapons and ammunition to soldiers among the main priorities of his defense policy.
Strikes against Russian targets
Hmara said Ukraine should carry out long- and medium-range strikes against Russian military and strategic targets. The new minister also called for the development of Ukraine's defense industry and an increase in weapons production.
Hmara said coordination among the president, parliament, the government, the General Staff, the Defense Ministry, army units, weapons manufacturers and international partners also needed to be strengthened.

From acting minister to permanent appointment
Hmara previously served as acting head of Ukraine's Security Service. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy instructed Hmara to serve as acting defense minister after the government resigned in July.
During the government reshuffle in July, Defense Minister Mihail Fedorov also left office along with the government led by Yuliya Sviridenko.
Sibiga becomes foreign minister
On the same day, parliament also approved the appointment of Andrey Sibiga, who had been serving as acting foreign minister, as foreign minister. The decision was approved with 266 votes.
Zelenskiy thanked the lawmakers who supported Sibiga's appointment as foreign minister and Hmara's appointment as defense minister. He said the tasks facing both ministers were clear and that Ukraine needed to become stronger.
