The drone that exploded near the compressor station of the Trans-Balkan natural gas pipeline fell in Bulgaria on August 8, near the former Kardam border crossing between the two countries. The explosion occurred about 1,000 meters from the station.
Georgiy Tykhiy, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, said they were in close contact with the Bulgarian authorities to clarify the circumstances and technical details of the incident. Tykhiy said Ukraine was fully open to cooperating with Bulgaria to uncover the details of the incident.
We can state with certainty that the Ukrainian Defense Forces did not deliberately send any vehicle toward Bulgaria. We are investigating all the circumstances and technical facts of the incident.
Tykhiy argued that the root cause of similar incidents was the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The Ukrainian spokesperson said ending the conflict as soon as possible was important for regional security.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said the drone had entered Bulgarian airspace via Romania and later exploded.
A preliminary examination of the wreckage by Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry indicated that the vehicle was most likely a decoy drone known as “Maya.” The ministry said such vehicles were widely used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry also conveyed its concern over the drone that entered the country’s airspace to Olesya Ilashchuk, Ukraine’s ambassador in Sofia. The ministry requested that all information about the incident be shared.
