Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand discussed implementing the agreements reached between the leaders of the two countries ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Canada. The peace process, Europe’s role, frozen Russian assets and the security of maritime transport in the Black Sea were at the center of the meeting.
The ministers assessed steps that could advance the bilateral agenda and deliver concrete results. They exchanged views on the need to preserve unity among partners for a comprehensive and lasting peace, expand cooperation with countries in different regions and increase international support.
Russian assets and pressure through sanctions
Sybiha said pressure on Russia should be increased. He stressed the need to advance the process of using frozen Russian assets to meet Ukraine’s financial needs.
The Ukrainian foreign minister also raised Ukraine’s initiative to restrict the issuance of visas and entry to people who took part in the conflict. He said those who participated in the war between Russia and Ukraine should not have unlimited access to the opportunities offered by the democratic world.
Seeking security for the Black Sea corridor
The situation in the Black Sea and the safe operation of Ukraine’s maritime corridor were also among the meeting’s topics. The sides discussed options that could help restore freedom of maritime transport.
Sybiha and Anand also coordinated preparations for the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly to be held in New York. They assessed how the platform could be used to expand international cooperation on food security.
Ministerial conference in Toronto
The meeting also addressed preparations for the ministerial conference to be held in Toronto on September 28–29. Canada, Ukraine and Norway will co-host the meeting.
The conference will address the return, rehabilitation and reintegration of children deported from Ukraine, as well as detained civilians and prisoners of war. Ukraine and Canada aim to secure broad international participation in the meeting and achieve concrete results on these issues.
