The White House announced that U.S. President Trump had signed the “Lindsey O. Graham 2026 Russia and Iran Sanctions Act,” which had passed Congress, and that the measure had entered into force.
Economic pressure on Russia to increase
The new law provides for sanctions against senior Russian government officials, oligarchs and state-owned companies. It also allows tariffs to be imposed on countries that purchase the largest quantities of Russian crude oil and natural gas.
Scope of Iran sanctions expands
The law also provides for an expansion of the scope of existing sanctions against Iran.
Measure passes Congress
The bill, whose preparation was led by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, known for his support for Israel, brought Republican and Democratic senators in the United States together on the issue. Graham died suddenly on July 11.
The Senate approved the bill on August 7. The House of Representatives also approved the measure on September 17, and the law was submitted to Trump for his signature.
