The Kulikovo Field Museum-Reserve is preparing a tourist guide for three routes connecting Moscow with the historic site through the Tula Region. The planned routes will begin on federal highways, then continue along regional roads before reaching Kulikovo Field.
The museum’s press service said the project is based on the historic ties between Moscow and Kulikovo Field. Olga Kashirina, head of the museum’s Excursions and Tourism Department, said Dmitry Ivanovich Donskoy had advanced from Moscow toward the battle and that a significant share of visitors came from the capital region.
Historic routes compared with modern roads
The historic route taken by the Russian army as it advanced toward Kulikovo Field served as the basis for determining the guide’s routes. Because the roads of the 14th century do not correspond to modern highways, researchers compared historical data with a contemporary automobile map.
Following the comparison, archaeological monuments and historic settlements were identified as shared stops. The museum team traveled the routes by car and examined some sections on foot to assess the locations to be included in the guide.
Historic figures to be featured on the routes
The guide will introduce not only the heroes of the Battle of Kulikovo but also other important figures from medieval history. Information about people and families connected with geographical names between Moscow and Kulikovo Field will be matched with the relevant sections of the routes.
Earlier guides prepared by the museum included routes linking neighboring regions with Kulikovo Field, natural and architectural landmarks along those routes, and the reflection of historical events in literature. The new project will instead focus on the lives of historic figures and their connections with the region.
Historical and visual materials being compiled
The collection and preparation of historical and visual materials for the guide are continuing. The museum aims to enable visitors to consult the guide again during independent trips and learn more about the routes and the history of the country.
