Music critic, journalist and television host Sergey Sosedov, who was in the Yakutian city of Neryungri for an international competition, died at the age of 58 on September 23, 2026.
Arrangements are under way to send Sosedov’s body to Moscow, while the exact cause of death will be determined after medical examinations. The entertainment segment of the competition, at which Sosedov had been scheduled to serve as head of the jury in Neryungri, was canceled and a memorial program was prepared for the artist.
Sosedov’s final hours in Neryungri and the investigation
Sosedov did not travel directly from Moscow to Neryungri; he reached the city via Blagoveshchensk together with the competition’s other guests. Tamerlan Karayev, director of the Darkhan Hotel, said Sosedov had been cheerful and joking about half an hour before his death. Karayev said Sosedov went outside to smoke and felt unwell while returning to the hotel.
There are differing accounts of how the incident unfolded. Investigators obtained security camera footage, but it has not yet been clarified whether a criminal investigation or a preliminary inquiry is being conducted.
Sosedov was urgently taken to hospital after becoming unwell and underwent surgery. Possible explanations included a detached blood clot causing the sudden illness or cerebral edema developing after a head injury sustained in a fall. None of these claims has been officially confirmed.
There were also claims that Sosedov had experienced heart problems for a long time and had told relatives about a week before his death that he was not feeling well. Although his trip to Yakutia was considered a possible trigger for clot formation, the exact details of his travel route in this regard have not been disclosed.
Viktor Bezzubov, the competition’s organizer, announced that an autopsy had been conducted. Bezzubov said the flight that would carry Sosedov’s body to Moscow would be determined after the death certificate was prepared.
Sosedov’s television career and the competition in Yakutia
Sosedov graduated with honors from the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University and became known in the late 1990s for his work on the program “Akuly pera.” He later served as a jury member on “X-Factor” in Ukraine and “Faktor BY” in Belarus.
Sosedov also hosted the television program “Za granью” and in recent years was among the permanent jury members of “Superstar!” and “VIA Superstar!” He had traveled to Neryungri as head of the jury for the “Pearl of the Far East 2026” international fashion and beauty competition.
Memorial ceremony to replace entertainment program
The entertainment segment of the competition scheduled for September 25 at the Pushkin Center for Culture and Spirituality was canceled. The program will begin at 6 p.m. with a memorial ceremony for Sosedov.
Viktor Bezzubov announced that a special award named after Sosedov would be unveiled during the memorial program. The award is planned to be presented in the future as part of the “Pearl of the World” competition.
Condolences from the music and television worlds
Journalist Ksenia Sobchak described Sosedov as one of the symbols of music journalism from the 1990s to the present and said he had numerous plans for television. Singer Olga Buzova recalled working with him on the “Faktor BY” program in Belarus and remembered Sosedov as a genuine and kind-hearted person.
Actress Yana Poplavskaya highlighted Sosedov’s education and talent. Television host Lera Kudryavtseva said they often argued while serving together on juries, but noted that Sosedov’s stern appearance concealed a different personality.
Dmitry Malikov, Lolita Milyavskaya, Stas Piekha and Kirill Turichenko also conveyed their condolences to Sosedov’s relatives.
Sosedov’s mother, Antonina Petrovna, said she was in deep shock after her son’s death and was waiting for his body to be brought to Moscow. The family said the farewell ceremony would be held in Moscow. The burial is expected to take place at Perepechinskoye Cemetery, although the date of the funeral has not yet been announced.
