Russian skater Alexandra Trusova will face another important test during her comeback season, which she resumed after a four-year break. Trusova, the 2022 Olympic runner-up, aims to secure the first alternate spot for the Grand Prix events with her result at the Denis Ten Memorial Tournament in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
One of the last opportunities for the Grand Prix standings
Under the new rules, achieving this goal requires winning a "challenger" tournament. Trusova completed both of her programs cleanly at the competition in Japan and performed a quadruple lutz in her free skate. Despite this, she finished the event, which featured Japan’s leading female skaters, with a silver medal.
Expectations surrounding Trusova rose after her result in Japan and her successful programs at the Russian national team’s control competition. The event in Almaty is one of the last major opportunities she can use to pursue the first alternate spot before the Grand Prix series begins.

Trusova’s application to compete in the next challenger tournament, to be held in Budapest, has not been accepted, while she is among the alternates.
Trusova attempted two quadruple jumps
During the first practice session in Almaty, Trusova worked on a quadruple lutz and a quadruple toe loop. She landed the lutz attempt cleanly, but completed only two rotations on the toe loop.
The session indicated that Trusova is preparing to use the highly difficult content in her free skate again. The result of the competition will depend not only on Trusova’s performance but also on how cleanly her rivals complete their jumps.
The skater said she should not be expected to perform five quadruple jumps as she did in her previous period. Trusova said her physical condition was not the same as before and that she was in good form, but would not return to the level required for five quadruple jumps.

Four more skaters practiced difficult jumps in Almaty
Besides Trusova, four other skaters attempted jumps rated at ultra-C difficulty during practice. Maria Zakharova landed a quadruple toe loop cleanly, while Dina Khusnutdinova worked on a triple Axel.
Sofya Samodelkina, who competes for Kazakhstan, fell on an attempted triple Axel. Veronika Zhilina, competing for Azerbaijan, attempted a quadruple Salchow outside the practice run-through.
If her rivals complete their programs cleanly, Trusova’s technical content and quadruple jumps will be among the critical elements of the competition. The event in Almaty will show not only her level during the comeback season but also her chances of entering the Grand Prix events through an alternate spot.
