New York Rangers defeated Utah Mammoth 4-2 at home in the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season. Russian goaltender Igor Shesterkin was one of the standout players of the game, stopping 28 shots and recording an assist on his team's empty-net goal.
The Rangers' goal came at the end of a play in which Shesterkin passed the puck to Will Cuylle instead of sending it directly toward the opposing goal. After Cuylle's pass, Eeli Tolvanen sent the puck into the empty net.
Cuylle praises Russian goaltender's offensive contribution
Will Cuylle said he found it amusing when fans called out "Shoot!" to Shesterkin in the first period. Noting that the opposing team still had a goaltender on the ice when the chant began, Cuylle praised Shesterkin for passing instead of shooting on his own before the empty-net goal.

Cuylle described Shesterkin as a "smart hockey player." The Rangers forward said the Russian goaltender was able to contribute to the team's offense in addition to making saves.
Shesterkin records points in consecutive games
The game against Utah marked the second consecutive game in which Shesterkin recorded a point. In the previous game, when the Rangers defeated Tampa Bay Lightning 5-1, the goaltender scored the first goal of his NHL career.

Shesterkin also targeted the opponent's empty net against Utah. However, defenseman Mikhail Sergachev returned and intercepted the puck.
A rare streak among NHL goaltenders
Shesterkin became the first goaltender to record points in two consecutive games since Connor Ingram achieved the feat in February 2025.
Goaltenders who recorded points in three consecutive games in NHL history include Henrik Lundqvist, Ed Belfour and Tom Barrasso.
