Russia's Ambassador to Washington, Aleksandr Darchiev, said that US President Donald Trump could come up with a groundbreaking solution in Russia-US relations.
Darchiev spoke at a reception held on June 12 at the Russian Embassy in Washington to celebrate Russia Day. The ambassador noted that a two-and-a-half-year presidential term is a significant period and that making a major move during this time seems possible.
Darchiev also emphasized that it is currently unpredictable which direction US domestic developments and foreign policy will take. However, he said the current timeframe could be sufficient for a notable step in bilateral relations.
According to the Russian ambassador, such progress requires political will. Darchiev described Trump as a politician who knows how to surprise and make groundbreaking decisions.
This assessment comes at a time when expectations about how relations between Moscow and Washington will evolve are being revisited.
