The expansion of the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant has come onto the agenda in nuclear energy cooperation between Russia and Egypt. Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev announced that talks have begun on adding two more reactors to the project.
Likhachev made the statement at a press conference in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod after meeting Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Mostafa Esmat. The Rosatom chief said the governments of the two countries would be informed once they reached agreement on the terms of the project.
Financial model being developed for new units
The talks cover a possible second expansion phase and focus on the financial and economic model for the fifth and sixth reactors.
The existing project at El Dabaa consists of four Russian-designed VVER-1200 reactors. Construction of all four units is continuing simultaneously, while the first reactor is expected to be connected to the electricity grid in 2028.
Target set for nuclear fuel in 2027
Nuclear fuel deliveries for the first reactor are planned for 2027. Likhachev said the work had reached its most exciting phase and entered its peak period, describing the first reactor as the project’s lead unit.
Once the four reactors planned for the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, which Rosatom is building on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, are completed, the facility is expected to have a total capacity of 4.8 gigawatts.
