Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that his country plans to submit its official application for European Union membership in the near future.
Pashinyan made the remarks during the presentation of the government’s 2026–2031 program in Armenia’s parliament in Yerevan. He said the official application should be submitted before a roadmap is prepared for a possible membership referendum.
Pashinyan said, "First and foremost, Armenia must submit its official application for European Union membership."
Stating that the application process would require comprehensive work, Pashinyan said the step would be taken "in the near future." He noted that Armenia would take into account the concerns voiced by its partners in the Eurasian Economic Union when implementing its decision to apply.
Roadmap for EU referendum on the agenda
In March 2025, the Armenian parliament adopted a law outlining the work required to launch the process of joining the European Union.
Pashinyan had previously said that a membership referendum would be meaningful when public discussions reached a decisive stage and a roadmap for it could be prepared.
Member states of the Eurasian Economic Union warned that Armenia’s possible integration with the European Union could affect its membership in the bloc.
