New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani hosted Palestinian families from the Gaza Strip at Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the city's mayor.
The meeting took place on the evening of September 23. Mamdani had dinner with the Palestinian families before planting an olive tree with them on the grounds of the residence.
On September 24, Mamdani posted footage of the meeting on social media. The timing of the post drew attention because it appeared while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was addressing the UN General Assembly in New York.

“Last night, I planted an olive tree at Gracie Mansion with Palestinian families from Gaza. Let peace be our future,” Mamdani wrote.
Netanyahu also mentioned Mamdani during his address to the UN General Assembly, accusing the New York mayor of antisemitism. Mamdani later responded to Netanyahu's statements, calling the accusations against him “baseless lies.”

The meeting with Palestinian families from Gaza and the planting of the olive tree drew attention to Mamdani's message about Palestine and peace at a time when New York was at the center of the international agenda because of the UN General Assembly.
