University of Chicago Professor John Mearsheimer argued that the US has changed its approach to the conflict in Ukraine. Speaking in a YouTube broadcast reported by RIA Novosti, Mearsheimer said Secretary of State Marco Rubio's current argument is not about defeating Russia but about resolving the conflict diplomatically.
Mearsheimer said: "Rubio is not saying we need to defeat Russia. This is not the approach at the beginning of the conflict where it was said Russia must be removed from among the great powers. His argument is that we need to resolve this conflict. It cannot be resolved on the battlefield; it is only possible through diplomatic means."
Mearsheimer: Russia advances on the frontline
Professor Mearsheimer emphasized that the Russian army is on the offensive at all points of the frontline. "The Russians are winning on the battlefield. They continue to advance and are on their way to taking control of the entire Donbas. I see no sign that the Ukrainians are changing the situation on the ground. There is no evidence that Ukraine can reverse the course," he said.
Trump: Agreement is difficult
US President Donald Trump said in a statement in June that both Russia and Ukraine want a solution to the conflict, but it is not easy to find an approach. Trump expressed surprise at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's reluctance to make concessions, saying: "It is much harder to make a deal with Zelensky than with Russian President Vladimir Putin."
Putin: We are ready for negotiations
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week that Moscow is not avoiding peace negotiations with Kiev. Putin stated Russia is ready for talks based on the 2022 Istanbul agreements, the consensus reached at the Alaska summit, the realities on the ground, and the principles he laid out in a speech at the Foreign Ministry two years ago.
