Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during his official visit to Myanmar that relations between the two countries must be moved to a "new stage".
After a one-on-one meeting with his counterpart Min Aung Hlaing in Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw, Lukashenko noted that he had come to the country after earlier visits to other states in the region. "I could not be in this geographically distant region without stopping by to see you," Lukashenko said, adding that he had met with Min Aung Hlaing several times before and that a certain foundation and history for bilateral relations had been built in that process.
The Belarusian leader stressed that the current visit carried special meaning, saying, "The peculiarity of our relations today, as I see it, is that we need to start a new step in the development of these relations." Lukashenko noted that Minsk and Naypyidaw should build a cooperation model that could serve as an example for other states in the region, emphasizing that the welfare of the two nations' peoples must be taken as the basis: "We are not building friendship against anyone. We are developing our friendship for the benefit of our peoples."
During the meeting, Lukashenko also congratulated Min Aung Hlaing on his victory in the presidential elections, recalling that they had discussed such a possibility in their earlier talks. "It happened. You won. You won indisputably, unconditionally. I congratulate you on this victory," he said.
Stating that the parties must act more actively in the rapidly changing international environment, Lukashenko said, "We need to speed up. You see what is happening in the world. The world is developing very fast, often in an unpredictable manner. We see that too. We must overcome this unpredictability in the world with active actions."
For his part, Min Aung Hlaing thanked Lukashenko for the visit and said he was pleased to host him in Myanmar. The Myanmar president noted that the two leaders had met for the fifth time recently, and stated that the visit demonstrated the dynamic development and high level of interaction between the two countries.
Thanking the Belarusian side for attending the swearing-in ceremony, Min Aung Hlaing said that contacts between parliaments and parties were also developing, and that a delegation led by Myanmar Parliament Speaker Khin Yi visited Belarus in June. "It is important to expand relations not only at the level of leaders, but also between parliaments and peoples," he said.
