Iran issued an official response to the document submitted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In its document numbered C 137/16/4, sent to the IMO on July 6, Tehran stated that the UAE's document was selective and political, and lacked a legal basis.
In its response, Iran stated that the primary cause of maritime risks in the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz is the attacks by the US and Israel. Iran claimed that the UAE's territory and infrastructure were used in these attacks.
Tehran also stated that the US's unlawful blockade measures against ships entering and leaving Iranian ports, the seizure of commercial vessels, and armed interventions against Iranian-flagged ships are serious risks falling within the IMO's purview, but that these issues were deliberately ignored in the document in question.
Iran reiterated that it is not a party to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and does not recognize the transit passage regime. Iran stated that maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains open under security coordination.
Finally, Iran called on the IMO Council to avoid political documents that exceed its mandate.
