Internet restrictions implemented in Russia in 2026 have significantly raised the level of public concern. According to national index data, the issue of internet restrictions caused twice as much anxiety as the coronavirus concerns in 2020. The blocking of social media platforms and interruptions in mobile internet services not only make it difficult for citizens to access information but also affect their daily lives. Additionally, problems experienced in payments made via bank cards and QR codes threaten financial security.
While the Kremlin spokesperson stated that these digital restrictions are applied for security reasons, President Vladimir Putin demanded the development of mechanisms to ensure the uninterrupted operation of critical services. Research shows that internet outages affect large segments of society and restrict the flow of information. Interestingly, the public sees internet problems as the most important issue on the agenda, surpassing other major events.
For example, although international developments such as conflicts in Iran receive more media coverage, internet restrictions hold a more prominent place in the public agenda.
