Hungary ordered 10 Russian diplomats to leave the country. The government cited activities incompatible with the diplomats’ diplomatic status as the reason for the decision.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban said the activities could not be accepted under the Vienna Convention. Orban announced that the diplomats had been notified that they must leave the country.
The Budapest government said the move did not mean the end of diplomatic relations with Russia. Orban said Hungary wanted to maintain the necessary dialogue on the basis of mutual respect and adherence to the rules.
No details were provided about the activities carried out by the diplomats.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russia would respond to the decision. Zakharova said the response to what she called the anti-Russian lobby in Budapest would be tough.
Relations between Hungary and Russia remained close during the tenure of Viktor Orban, the country’s former prime minister. Viktor Orban lost office in a vote held in April after 16 years in power; during that period, Hungary maintained close relations with Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
New Prime Minister Peter Magyar, who took office in May, is seeking to repair relations with the European Union and Ukraine, which had deteriorated under the previous government.
