German Chancellor Friedrich Merz traveled to Kyiv to demonstrate that support for Ukraine will continue and to discuss the country’s needs in the coming period. Merz was accompanied by Economy and Energy Minister Katherina Reiche and 10 representatives of German business from the defense and energy sectors.
Speaking in Kyiv, Merz said that if Russia was not stopped, its military machine could sooner or later turn toward Germany. The German chancellor said Ukraine would need Germany’s full support in the coming weeks.
Merz stressed that Germany would continue assisting Ukraine before winter. He also said he aimed to confirm during his meeting with Zelenskyy that Berlin’s support would continue.

Aid and energy on the agenda during Kyiv visit
A new military and financial aid package for Ukraine is expected to be announced during the visit. Expanding defense industry cooperation and rebuilding the country’s energy infrastructure are also among the issues to be discussed.

Germany and Ukraine are expected to sign agreements on the joint production of unmanned aerial vehicles. Merz is also expected to pledge the rapid delivery to Ukraine of thousands of interceptor drones to be used against high-speed attack drones.
According to German government officials, Merz will announce €1 billion in military aid for Ukraine and a €350 million support package for repairs in the energy sector. The business delegation accompanying Merz includes executives from Siemens Energy, Hensoldt, Diehl Defense and Quantum Systems.
German defense technology company Quantum and Ukrainian manufacturer WIY Drones set up a joint venture in April to produce the Strila interceptor drone and related air defense technologies. The agreement between Germany and Ukraine is also expected to cover the joint development and production of weapons with a range of more than 1,000 kilometers.
