Russia’s Central Election Commission announced that early voting has begun for the State Duma elections in hard-to-reach and remote settlements across the country.
The procedure, available from August 30 to September 17, will allow small groups of voters who cannot reach polling stations on the main voting days to cast their ballots in advance. The main voting for the State Duma elections will take place from September 18 to 20.
Regions will determine the scope of early voting
Regional election authorities will decide whether early voting will be held in their areas. The procedure may be organized for all voters registered at polling stations in remote areas or limited to specific groups unable to reach polling centers using conventional means of transportation.
Those eligible for early voting include some military personnel, residents of northern settlements, reindeer herders, workers at remote industrial facilities, personnel at polar and meteorological stations, and crews of ships that will be at sea during the main voting days.
Some 192,928 people voted early in the 2021 elections
According to Russia’s Central Election Commission, 192,928 people living in hard-to-reach and remote areas, as well as those aboard ships at sea during the main voting days, voted early in the 2021 State Duma elections.
This figure accounted for approximately 0.17 percent of all voters in Russia. The number of voters who cast their ballots early this year is also expected to remain low compared with the total number of voters nationwide.
