Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry called on Russian authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into an incident that occurred outside the guesthouse of Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Russia around noon on August 27.
According to the ministry’s statement, unidentified individuals placed provocative images outside the guesthouse. Azerbaijani authorities condemned the act and called on the relevant Russian institutions to carry out an appropriate legal assessment of the incident.
Potential to strain relations
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said the incident may have been intended to artificially strain relations between Azerbaijan and Russia. The ministry also said it could be part of an allegedly “dirty and biased campaign” against Azerbaijan waged by some Russian media outlets.
Request for diplomatic security
Azerbaijan called for measures to prevent similar provocative acts from recurring. The ministry requested that those responsible be identified and that the incident be investigated under the law.
The statement said Russia was expected to fully fulfill its obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
In this context, Azerbaijan called for the embassy and its staff to receive an appropriate level of protection and for provocative acts that could impede the diplomatic mission’s normal activities to be prevented.
