Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson made strong statements about Russia’s war against Ukraine and urged Moscow to abandon its pursuit of restoring imperial influence.
In an interview with Ukrainian journalist Natalia Lutsenko, Johnson said he considers Russia’s inability to abandon its imperial past one of the country’s main problems.
“The British abandoned their empire”
Johnson cited the history of the United Kingdom, recalling that the British Empire was once the largest in the world.
He said the United Kingdom ultimately abandoned the imperial model and that Russia must also accept the independence of neighboring states.
“They should let Ukraine go”
Speaking about relations between Russia and Ukraine, Johnson used a well-known metaphor about relationships between people.
“If you love someone, let them go. If they come back, they are yours. If they do not, they never were,” the former British prime minister said.
Johnson then added that Russia must “let Ukraine go” and acknowledge the existing political reality.
“The age of empires is over”
One of Johnson’s central statements was that the age of empires had come to an end.
He recalled that in 1991 Russia recognized Ukraine as an independent state and subsequently recognized its borders.
In Johnson’s view, attempting to restore the influence of the Russian Empire contradicts this reality.
Johnson reiterates his support for Ukraine
During the interview, the former British prime minister also said support for Kyiv must continue and advocated maintaining Ukraine’s prospects for NATO membership.
Johnson believes European countries should continue strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities while also increasing pressure on Moscow.
