Ukraine's Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture reported that a serious environmental disaster occurred as a result of an attack that hit a fuel station in Kyiv's Obolon district. The ministry said in a statement on its Telegram channel that a large amount of petroleum products leaked into Kirillovskoye Lake, part of the Opechen lake system.
The statement included the remarks: "Thanks to the rapid response of the teams, most of the fuel was prevented from reaching the lake. However, according to preliminary calculations, more than 350 tons of petroleum products and emulsion mixed into the lake."
The ministry noted that experts are carrying out a two-stage cleanup plan, that the State Emergency Service has contained the pollution with barriers, and that specialized equipment has cleaned the main oil layer from the lake surface.
In the next stage, a special absorbent material will be applied to the water surface to bind and remove the remaining oil layer. It was emphasized that this method will prevent contamination of the bottom and groundwater.
Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture Iryna Ovcharenko said that the pollution was brought under control in the first hours, but the environmental damage is extremely serious. Ovcharenko stated that the ministry has begun work to assess the environmental damage.
The ministry also announced that the Commission on Technogenic-Ecological Safety and Emergency Situations will approve a comprehensive cleanup plan. The plan includes steps for the complete cleanup of the lake, continuous water quality monitoring, control of neighboring water sources, assessment of environmental damage, and restoration of the ecosystem.
Earlier, it was reported that a large-scale oil spill occurred in Kirillovskoye Lake as a result of a heavy attack on Kyiv on the night of July 2.
