This page is for Turkish citizens who married before Ukrainian authorities in Ukraine. It explains within what period, through which representation, and with which documents the marriage is registered in the Turkish civil registry, as well as applying by mail and applying from Turkey. For procedures before the marriage, see U5.1.

Registration mandatory: 30-day period

  • Marriages of Turkish citizens before foreign authorities abroad are valid provided that they comply with the Turkish Civil Code and there is no ground requiring annulment.
  • The marriage is reported by the husband; if the husband is a foreign national, by the wife, within 30 days at the latest. For this purpose, the marriage certificate obtained from the foreign authority is submitted or sent to the Turkish representation in that location.
  • The representation prepares the marriage notification and sends it to the civil registry office; the marriage is registered in the family register.
  • If it is not possible to apply to the representation, the marriage certificate may be submitted to a civil registry office in Turkey after being translated into Turkish and duly certified and authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Foreign documents bearing an apostille are not additionally authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; they are used directly before the authorities of countries party to the convention. In Ukraine, apostilles on civil registry documents are affixed by the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice (see U5.4).

War and martial law: War and martial law (воєнний стан) have continued in Ukraine since 24 February 2022. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine extended martial law for another 90 days starting on 2 August 2026. The Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Kyiv reiterated its warning on 16 June 2025 that citizens should not travel to Ukraine unless necessary. Before setting out, check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Overseas travel announcements and Kyiv Embassy announcement pages.
